Premier League betting markets shift ahead of 2026/27 kickoff

Arsenal lead the 2026/27 Premier League title odds ahead of Manchester City, as bookmakers and Polymarket traders price the new season.

The 2026/27 Premier League season begins on Aug. 21 with defending champion Arsenal hosting promoted Coventry City, and the title market has already moved in the final days before kickoff. Arsenal have shortened since winning the league in May, Manchester City have drifted through their first summer without Pep Guardiola, and more than $6 million has changed hands on Polymarket’s season winner market.

Bookmakers priced Arsenal at 6/4 to retain the title immediately after they secured their first Premier League championship in 22 years, with Manchester City at 5/2, Liverpool at 5/1, and Manchester United at 7/1. Oddschecker’s market on Aug. 19 has Arsenal down to 13/10, City out to 18/5, and Liverpool at 13/2, while Manchester United sit around 9/1.

Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield win over City on Aug. 16 accelerated that movement two days before sportsbooks entered their final week of Premier League preparation. Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Ødegaard scored in Cardiff as Arsenal comfortably beat Enzo Maresca’s side in his first competitive match since replacing Guardiola. City have also lost several major players this summer and remain active in the transfer market, which leaves bookmakers with considerably more uncertainty to price than they had at the end of last season.

Polymarket traders have gone almost exactly the same way. Its Premier League champion market has generated $6.31 million in trading volume since opening on July 2, with Arsenal carrying a 46% implied probability of winning the league, Manchester City at 22%, Liverpool at 13%, and Chelsea and Manchester United both at 10%. Polymarket prices move as users buy and sell contracts rather than being set by a bookmaker, but the ranking now closely resembles the conventional sportsbook market.

Manchester City’s individual outcome has produced the most trading activity on that market at roughly $1.63 million, against around $504,000 for Arsenal, $450,000 for Chelsea, and $370,000 for Liverpool. Those are total trading volumes rather than money staked on each team to win, so City’s larger number doesn’t mean traders are backing them more heavily. It shows how much buying and selling has gone through that contract as expectations around the club have shifted.

Opening-weekend markets are moving into much shorter betting cycles as team news comes out. Arsenal are as short as 1/5 to beat Coventry on Friday, with the promoted side at 18/1 and the draw at 7/1. Manchester United are around 2/5 for their Saturday trip to Hull City, while Newcastle-Liverpool on Sunday is priced considerably closer. All 10 opening-round matches run between Friday and Monday, giving sportsbooks four consecutive days of Premier League betting straight after the summer break.

UK bookmakers have increased promotional activity specifically around the league’s return. Paddy Power is offering new customers £40 in free bets after a qualifying £5 wager, and Betfred has attached a free Bet Builder promotion to Arsenal-Coventry. Sky Bet has taken a longer approach, giving qualifying new customers a £5 free bet every month through May after an initial £5 football wager. Conditions differ between operators, but all three campaigns are running as the Premier League restarts rather than sitting there as generic year-round offers.

The timing follows an unusually short gap between the Premier League and the 2026 World Cup, which finished on July 19. Entain, owner of Ladbrokes and Coral, said World Cup activity helped increase first-half revenue and that engagement was continuing into the current quarter, with the number of first-time bettors doubling compared with the 2022 tournament. The Premier League gives operators an immediate chance to keep those accounts active instead of waiting months for another major football event.

This is also the first Premier League season without gambling companies appearing as front-of-shirt sponsors. Clubs agreed in 2023 to remove those logos after the end of 2025/26, though betting brands can still advertise through sleeves, stadium boards, other sponsorship inventory, and their own marketing. That removes one of gambling’s most visible positions in English football without reducing the amount of betting activity around the competition itself.

Both bookmakers and prediction markets had settled on Arsenal as the clear favorite by Aug. 19, and what has changed since May is the gap behind them. Arsenal have moved from 6/4 to around 13/10 while City have gone from 5/2 to around 18/5, and Polymarket now gives the defending champions more than twice City’s implied probability. The first league results come on Friday, when those prices finally start reacting to competitive Premier League football rather than transfers, preseason games, and one Community Shield.
